Born of Catholic and Mahayana Buddhist parents near Halong Bay, Cao Trinh arrived in East Calder from Vietnam in 1997. Cao Trinh — known locally as Ms. Trinh — doesn’t so much draw inspiration as is overwhelmed by her experiences as an emigré; sights so new and surprising, so different from her coastal home in Vietnam, yet familiar: waves, sails, and smiles. The tension of newness and familiarity feeds her art as she explores each image’s essence and energy and delights in syndetic hues of color.
