Well, I’m not a crook.

President Richard M. Nixon felt it was necessary to explain himself, which in itself was a bad sign.

He was having a bad year in 1973 when he felt the need to tell everybody he made hundreds of thousands of dollars, and he was honest while doing it. Really.

His folksy line didn’t convince the public.
