ATM Safety

The following guidelines will guide you safely through ATM transactions.

Choosing an ATM

• Put your personal safety first.
• Be aware of others around you. If someone near the ATM is behaving suspiciously or makes you feel uncomfortable, choose another machine.
• If you notice anything unusual about the ATM or see signs of tampering, do not use the machine and report it to the bank immediately.

Using an ATM

• Give other users space to enter their PIN in private. We recommend standing about six feet away from the person in front of you until the person has completed the transaction. Some ATMs have a safety zone marking this area.
• Be aware of your surroundings, if someone is crowding or watching you, cancel the transaction and go to another machine.
• Do not accept help from 'well-meaning' strangers and never allow yourself to be distracted.
• Stand close to the ATM and always shield the keypad to avoid anyone seeing you enter your PIN.

Leaving an ATM

• Once you have completed a transaction, discreetly put your money and card away before leaving the ATM.
• If the ATM does not return your card, report its loss immediately to the bank.
• Dispose of your ATM receipt, mini-statement, or balance inquiry with care. Tear up or shred these items before discarding them.
